Your Child’s Hearing Health While at Home

While many school districts have students e-Learning at home, this can be a new challenge for hearing impaired children and their caregivers. As families continue to learn to navigate this challenging time, we wanted to provide some tips to help you care for your child while they are home more than they usually are.

Have your child wear their hearing aids as much as possible

Wearing hearing aids is essential, no matter what activity they are doing. When your child wears hearing aids, it provides the best possible success for daily communication, language, and learning.

Practice positive communication and encourage togetherness

This not only strengthens family bonds, but it provides your child with a baseline for good communication. When you are talking to your child, always make sure you are in the same room so your child can read your lips. This is also essential for your child to see other visual clues, such as facial expressions and body language. Ensure your child’s teacher knows that your child has a hearing impairment and discuss how both your child’s teacher and you can work together to provide your child with the best virtual learning environment. Turn on closed captioning, if your child’s learning devices have it available. When your child isn’t in school, make time for family activities without devices, such as board games or preparing meals together.

Regularly inspect and care for hearing aid devices

Add a daily task list to ensure your child’s hearing aids and other hearing care devices are properly working. Every morning before your child logs into school, check that their hearing aids are working. Make sure you always have extra batteries at home, enough for 2-3 months. Take hearing notes to determine what works for your child and what your child struggles with. For example, your child paid attention more when wearing hearing aids all day, or your child misunderstood what was said because the volume was low on the hearing aids.

Schedule a curbside or in-office appointment, as needed

If you are having issues with your child’s hearing aids or they need an adjustment, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment so it can be immediately corrected.
